So as it turns out, sharing a laptop with my nine year old sister leaves me without a laptop more often than not so I haven’t been able to get on as much as I want to. There’s also the fact that I’m still adjusting to a 14 time zone difference, an entirely different climate, and other such issues that keep my time pretty sparce. I haven’t even been able to start on my novel for NaNoWriMo, and I really miss making regular posts. So this morning I said, “excuses be damned!”and decided I will blog this morning! Unfortunately I couldn’t think of anything to write about….so I’m gonna do a few top five lists.
Top 5 Movies(this year)
My taste in movies changes so much this list never stays static so this is just the ones from this year.
5. This Is The End: I would like to see more movies like this where actors play themselves in a mocking way, it’s nice to see them laugh at themselves. Much like Dante’s Inferno this movie was more a satire on Hollywood, albeit with a lot more pot smoking and and crude humor. Better than I expected, with an ending that while corny was so friggin hilarious I loved every minute of it.

4.Man of Steel: I don’t like Superman, he just can’t be relatable to me. He whines too much about having nearly limitless power, he’s nearly indestructible, and his krypton item weakness seems more in his head than an actual weakness, able to pick and choose when it affects him or not. That being said, this movie was great, I watched it on the plane ride home. They did a great job, balancing angsty superman with relatable superman and the scenes against Zod and the other kryptonians are unlike anything in cinema and need to be scene if purely from an action stand point.

3.Star Trek – Into Darkness: I don’t know why I love this movie with its obvious plot holes and faults but I do. I guess I don’t run my movies through a fine toothed comb, I just sit down and shut off. I also am not a fan of the original Star Trek series! I’m a Picard fan myself, and I’ve never seen the original Wrath of Khan so I don’t get all the nerd rage. I admit to being a Benedict Cumberbatch fan and thoroughly look forward to Desolation of Smaug despite not liking the first Hobbit as much as I wanted to. This movie had some excellent action sequences and I love the cast, I actually give a damn about Kirk and Spock who up until the reboot were, to me, just some faceless sci-fi legends I knew nothing about except that one slept with everything that moved while the other made weird hand gestures.

2.The Avengers: I’m not just a comic book fan, I’m an Incredible Hulk fan. So much so that when Ruffalo was announced to be taking the place of Norton I wanted to boycott the movie. Hulk is the only reason I like comic books and the Avengers, the only hero who has a right to be angsty, he has no control over his powers. He’s less a man, more a force of nature. Ruffalo did an amazing job and Hulk outshone the rest of the avengers, even Robert Downy Junior’s Iron Man who is a close second favorite as far as the movies are concerned. Although I would’ve liked to see Lokis plan succeed and he turn the Hulk on his teammates, like he did in the original Avengers comic and wipe the floor with them, I understand Hollywood doesn’t cater to me nerdiness and I’ll accept Hulks defeat of Thor in the helicarrier as my little bit of fan service.

1. Pacific Rim: okay look, I know this movie was cheesy and predictable as all get out. A lot of the science didn’t make sense, and I know it’s not cost effective to build giant robots but c’mon people….Giant friggin robots, fighting giant friggin monsters! Every scene was just full of so much awesome. Now it wasn’t perfect by any means, I really wish the other bots had gotten more screen time, my personal favorite was the retro Russian monstrosity, the Mach-1, with its piston hammer fists that should’ve been allowed to pulp some Kaiju before its pretty lackluster demise. This movie gives me hope for the 2014 Godzilla remake, which I’m hoping will be over the top and just full of so much destruction that Michael Bay will piss himself in fear. I think I need to see a King Ghidora vs Godzilla fight on the big screen before I can die a happy nerd.

Top 5 Book Series
I haven’t read as much as I’d like to claim, I mean I started reading at age 4 and devoured text like a fat man does cupcakes, but mostly it was educational, I loved learning little facts and bits of trivia wit an emphasis on animals. I strayed into mythology and ghost stories eventually and wound up in fictitious a little late in the game but these are my all time favorite book series.
5. Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman
My introduction to fantasy literature, and subsequently, my gateway into DnD and tabletop gaming in general. It has your standard fantasy setup, a group of young heroes unite against an evil villain and slay monsters. Beneath the surface of its standard fantasy plot, the cast of characters are really enjoyable and keep you wanting to read. My favorite was the unapologetically evil Mage Raistlin Majere. He is without a doubt a bad dude, but he has his reasons. He fights for the good guys because he needs them to accomplish his means, they are pawns in his game for power with the ultimate goal to acquire limitless power. He has a twin brother Caramon Majere, who is every bit as physically strong as his brother is magically powerful and has an unyielding devotion to his twin. Great book series and a good read for fantasy fans.

4.Quadrail Series by Timothy Zahn
Mystery books aren’t usually my thing but Timothy Zahns blend of sci-fi and mystery is an excellent read from beginning to end. The series has only five books in it, only the last two are direct sequels, the others can be read out of context and still be enjoyed. The former Western Alliance intelligence professional Frank Compton is capable if almost super human levels of deduction, and his little group of equally intelligent and shady allies rounds out every novel with its fair collection of stunning reveals and twists and turns. This book series was suggested to me by my good friend Joy at Joy in Jeans, she herself has an excellent taste in books and her recommendations are usually spot on.

3. Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams(and the last one written by Eoin Colfer)
A good friend put it to me this way, “Hitchhikers Guide is a wonderful book, but a terrible novel.” I wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Adams frequently goes off on tangents, the book reads more like a series of Monty Python sketches rather than a single coherent story but I’ll be damned if it isn’t the single most hilarious book I’ve ever read. I laughed out loud, I bellowed, I chuckled and every chapter of Arther Dents bungling through the vast uncaring regions of outer space left me wit a smile on my face. The latest book titled “…And Another Thing” was written after Adams death and is a much better narrative but lacks a little of Adams charm but is still a great last adventure for the crew of The Heart of Gold.

2. John Dies at the End/This Book is Full of Spiders by David Wong
I listed these two together because they are direct sequels, with David Wongs third upcoming novel being placed in the same universe but without David and John. They are in my mind the perfect mixture of Cthulhu levels of horror and tongue in cheek humor. Creepy enough to give chills but full of dick jokes and intelligent humor that shakes you out of the horror and makes you smile at the apocalypse. The ending of the first book is downright chilling and brilliant and the second book turns the zombie genre on its head and rips it a new one. Definitely a must read, I don’t think I can recommend these books enough and unlike the rest of the books in this list, there are only two of them right now so you can easily catch up.

1. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Now some of you may notice the lack of a Game of Thrones entry, I was just as surprised to find that no matter how much I love those books they didn’t make it into my top five when I instinctively thought about it. I wanted to fit it in somewhere but I think that wouldn’t be right, the point being these were the books I thought of when I thought of my favorite books just off the top of my head. The Dresden Files being at the very top, mainly because of the protagonist Harry Dresden, a super sarcastic, über-nerd wizard detective set in a modern day Chicago. In between dodging ancient evil beasties, vampires, fairies, and ghosts he also makes deals with the police, mob bosses, and plays dungeons and dragons with a group of friendly werewolves on the weekends. He drives a beat up old Volkswagen beetle dubbed the “Blue Beetle” and flings spells like a rockstar, calling out his attacks like an anime character and reveling in it. He’s dark when he needs to be, and at times he’s downright scary and he always does what’s right even of it means he’ll die. He gets the crap kicked out of him in every book, the opponents he faces are way out of his league, ancient gods and fairy queens who could crush him with a thought. And yet he wins, not by some sort of deus ex machina but because he knows his opponents underestimate him and he outsmarts them. the series gets more epic as it goes along, with I think almost 13 books in the series so far and Harry Dresden is continuously beaten and torn down only to get back up shake the dust off and press on. I don’t think there is another series I have every enjoyed reading more, I really relate to Harry, more so than another Wizard Harry I grew up reading about.
“My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden, conjure by at it at your own risk.”
